The Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has moved up their next board meeting by ten days, from Monday April 18th to this Friday April 8th.
The meeting is set to discuss the actions and consequences for Will Smith after slapping Chris Rock during the 94th Oscars telecast.
Variety obtained a letter signed by Academy president David Rubin which indicates that following Smith’s resignation of his Academy membership last Friday, suspension or expulsion from the Academy are no longer a possibility.
As a result, the legally prescribed timetable to give Smith adequate time to prepare his response no longer applies and so the meeting has been brought forward.
Rubin adds: “It is in the best interest of all involved for this to be handled in a timely fashion.” The meeting will take place virtually over Zoom.
