Paramount Pictures’ family-friendly sequel “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is reportedly on track to collect $55 million over its three-day domestic opening weekend when the film opens this Friday.

That’s on par with the original which opened to a strong $58 million three-day haul ahead of a total $70 million four-day President’s Day holiday opening weekend in early 2020 just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic took off.

The new film has already taken in $30 million overseas where it opened in select territories last weekend. With a fairly cost-effective $90 million budget, the “Sonic” sequel is expected to easily take the U.S. box-office crown by Sunday – beating out “Morbius” which is expected to drop far enough for a $15-17 million second weekend haul.

The other big newcomer, Michael Bay’s “Ambulance,” is expected to earn at least $10 million in its opening weekend which would be a career-low for Bay whose last film was the expensive Netflix blockbuster “6 Underground”. That said, its cost-effective $40 million budget will limit its damage.

Both new releases have scored mixed reviews. A24’s genre mashup “Everything Everywhere All at Once” however, which has landed rave reviews, will expand nationwide after two weeks in limited release.
